pro-: forward

spect: derived from Latin "specere", meaning "look"

So prospect means:

Take a look forward to something.

  1. If take a look forward to something that will happen, this means "future of something".
  2. If take a look forward to mineral resources, this means "look for mineral resources in the ground or under the sea".
