respect = re + spect

re-: again

spect: derived from Latin "specere", meaning "look"

So respect means:

  1. Look at somebody again and again.
    This means "a feeling of admiring someone".
  2. Look to the first direction, and again to the second, and again to the third...
    This means "referring to every direction, aspect, or person".

Meaning 1:

This little boy looks at his hero again and again.

This little boy respects his hero.
