respect = re + spect

re-: again

spect: derived from Latin "specere", meaning "look"

So respect means:

  1. Look again and again at somebody.
    This means "a feeling of admiring someone".
  2. Look to the first direction, and again to the second, and again to the third...
    This means "referring to every direction, aspect, or person".

Evolution of usage
Meaning 1:

This little boy looks again and again at his hero.

=>

This little boy respects his hero.

You all, who need to be looked from the first direction, and again from the second, and again from the third..., need to write a report to me.

=>

You all, from all respects, need to write a report to me.
